Collectible card games live and die by their artwork and their rules.

The indie studio Imaginary Games is hoping to dazzle mobile gamers with both in its upcoming card battler Afterland.

Set in a nightmarish carnival world with an aesthetic somewhere between Tim Burton, Neil Gaiman, and Día de Los Muertos, Afterland features hand-painted artwork on each card and challenges players to battle for their very souls.

In Afterland, you play the part of a misfit performer stuck in the afterlife who must win back their soul by performing magic at a traveling carnival.

Each performer is part of a family of five characters, and each family member possesses their own unique abilities. To further spice up the gameplay, rival performers can try to trick you out of gold, fame, or even pieces of your soul.

In addition to the novel setting and dark, feminine artwork, Imaginary Games is looking to flesh out the world of Afterland by including a soundtrack by Papo & Yo composer Brian D'oliveira.

In order for this to happen, however, Afterland first has to succeed in its Kickstarter campaign. Currently, there are 29 days left in its drive to raise $32,000 - and backers can secure rare, mythic, or even exclusive cards to use in their Afterland decks.
