1% of iPod touch owners have upgraded to iPhone 3.0
So says mobile ads network AdMob |
Six million people may have upgraded to the iPhone 3.0 software according to Apple, but it seems the vast majority of them are iPhone owners, rather than iPod touch.
Mobile advertising firm AdMob has been analysing requests from its network of ads from both devices, and says that of those from iPod touches, just 1 per cent are from the 3.0 OS.
It blames the fact that iPod touch owners have to pay for the upgrade. iPhone owners don't, and AdMob's figures suggest 44 per cent of them have upgraded to 3.0.
"Developers looking to sell applications utilizing the 3.0 features can't be happy with Apple's decision to charge for the upgrade as it limits their available market size for downloads," says AdMob in its
blog post.
We'd love to hear your views if you're an iPod touch owner: have you upgraded, and if not, what's stopping you? Let us know with a comment.

I have an Ipod touch; would love to upgrade, but I'm not paying for it. I get no video, no mms, basically i get better apps and copy/paste. This is why I hate the iTunes model, you get nickle+dimed.

I upgraded, but my advice to other touch owners is not to bother. Cut and paste I've used but is too fiddly to be bothered with. The only other feature I've used is shake to skip tracks, but that only works 50% of the time.
Save your money till apps use the micro payment feature - something that doesn't excite me yet.

I have upgraded to iPhone 3.0. Yes I would like if the did not make iPod touch owners pay for the upgrade but I don't regret upgrading to 3.0 at all.

I have a touch and I have to say the changes are pretty small. Bluetooth sounds like it could get pretty big and the new apps coming are very impressive. I have noticed better performance and more intuitive controls but they are pretty small for AU$13. I ask every ipod touch/iphone owner to upgrade or at least illegally download it so we can get our hands on those awesome apps like Livefire.

You don't have to pay. If you're willing to do a little sleuthing, you can upgrade to 3.0 for free. The search functions and the fact that 3.0 will be very important for gaming soon means that you should upgrade. You don't need to jailbreak your iPod or anything, you can get it for free with a bit of effort. I don't feel guilty for not buying it either. It's just not fair on us iPod Touch users.

I've upgraded my 1st gen. Touch to 3.0 as I use it to play games... Also some of the games I have, have been updated to run under 3.0 so it was inevitable that I upgraded. The main benefit of upgrading in my opinion is the addition of two more springboards/pages and the spotlight search, which allows you to find and launch an app./game quite easily (also with this search function, apparently it's possible to go over the 11 pages and still find/launch an app./game - haven't tested this as I haven't filled all the pages yet...).

I'd be interested to know what Camzy means by being able to 3.0 for free. If it's not illegal to do then it would be nice if he could share the info to help other iPod Touch users avoid paying £6.
I've already upgraded and I paid for it. I didn't like paying for it but I accepted it. I know when I got my iPod what I was getting into so being charged for the upgrade didn't come as a surprise. So far the upgrade hasn't made the slightest bit of difference to me - the spotlight search is pretty pointless, copy and paste is of limited use, and the shake to shuffle function was a complete pain so I turned it off. However, I don't regret doing the upgrade as sooner or later it will be unavoidable if you want to keep using your iPod.

I've upgraded my iPod touch 1G as well, but so far, I am not too happy with it. The main reason for my upgrade has been that several apps, that I would like to use, demand the new OS (e.g. Colors!).
Unfortunately, several other applications are showing severe performance issues (PuzzleQuest, Fieldrunners) and are crashing (PuzzleQuest, even after a reset) - problems I never had before.
So, right now, I wait for updates for the problematic apps, but I wish Apple had done a better job in terms of compability :(

I think it's illegal to do it, but hey, the iPhone users got it free so why shouldn't we! Anyone wants to save the money should just google it.

Mixed reactions in here for sure. I can't think of an instance when I've had to pay for a firmware update for a device before, but then Apple often bucks the trend. So far the update seems like a minimal improvement but I'm sure that in the next few weeks, its strengths will start to emerge.
