ITV to stream World Cup on iPhones for free
The real one, not the PG Developers Cup, silly
Now that Don Fabio has selected his band of 23 merry men for the FIFA World Cup 2010, we English folk can all sit back, relax, and enjoy The Three Lions’ inevitable march to glory on Sunday 11 July.
That’s the theory.
In reality, a last 16 tie against the Germans looms and with that the ignominy of penalties. Which, in an England football team’s case equals certain defeat.
I digress.
If, like me, you’re an iPhone owner who can’t get enough of The Beautiful Game, help is at hand to feed your fix.
UK broadcaster ITV will be streaming free-of-charge all of ‘their’ games from the World Cup (rights in the UK are split evenly between BBC and ITV) over 3G and wi-fi.
This means that two of England’s Group games, clashes between USA and Algeria, will be available on Apple’s handheld via ITV’s web app.
Ben McOwen Wilson, director of online and interactive at ITV, notes: “As the only UK broadcaster to screen the World Cup on mobile, this application offers advertisers a dynamic way to interact with viewers and puts ITV at the forefront of mobile video-on-demand.”
Schedule information for the month-long tournament will also be included in the ITV app.
