Harvey Smith is about as rock star as game designers come. That's still not very rock star, of course, but he wears jeans and a T-shirt, so that's got to count for something.

Anyway, the Deus Ex lead designer has been chatting with G4TV about his recent exploits, with a particular emphasis on iPhone developments.

"I have so many friends now that have shipped apps or games, where they're just like 'dude, download my app, I made it in three months,'" he says. "So I go check it out and I'm like 'it's interesting' and instead of being a team of 100, I know my friend so-and-so made this and then he moved onto something else. That's cool."

Quite. Smith goes on to say that iPhone developments are becoming something of an expected addition to any game designer's repertoire, though he doesn't necessarily feel that peer pressure in this direction is a bad thing.

Over the past four months, Majesco Entertainments has made its first foray into the App Store - on the advice of Harvey's top dude mates - with KarmaStar, which landed itself a Bronze Award.

The message is clear from Smith's interview, however - if you're a game developer, make iPhone games.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
