CANADA Lux Touch (Sillysoft)

VS ICELAND Soft Freak Fiesta (Gogogic)

At the start of play, Canada and Iceland occupied the bottom two spots in Group A. Whilst Canada were mathematically in with an outside chance of qualifying for the knockout stages, it would still have to rely on the result of the France v Poland clash.

Iceland was already eliminated at this point, yet, of course, wanted to leave a positive impression on the tournament. These are professional app developers, after all, and not mollycoddled, highly-strung French footballers.

Risking it all then this lunchtime for the North American side was Lux Touch by Sillysoft, a game best described as 'real time strategy meets world conquest'. Perfect for the iPhone Game Developers World Championship, in fact.

Looking to go out with a bang rather than a whimper for Iceland came Soft Freak Fiesta, which, like its opponent, was turn-based and involved domination, yet contained a lot more bashing and bumping. Not of that kind, you dirty boy.

Kick Off: 3pm, 22nd June

The critical view: Lux Touch’s simple touchscreen controls looked set to direct operations from the word go, its flamboyant, colourful characteristics ably supplementing the measured, concise gameplay.

Soft Freak Fiesta’s critters fended the Canadians off, though, predominantly through its impressive range of multiplayer options at the back. Wi-fi, Bluetooth, and 3G all sparkled in defence for the Scandinavian outfit.

At the other end of the pitch, though, the Icelandic lads were rather less effective. Despite racing to the byline no less than five times in the opening period, nobody was able to dart in front of his marker and reward the winger for his sorcery and enterprise.

In part this was due to the North Americans’ own rearguard proving itself more than capable, the super speedy nature of its AI a lesson for all schoolboy sweepers and app developers alike.

Thus, with both defences well-marshalled and on top for the majority of the first half, inspiration was desperately needed from elsewhere if either was to notch the decisive goal...

Half time: Canada 0 – 0 Iceland The Fans’ 45: Unfortunately for both nations, fan support was remarkably thin on the iStadium ground this time.

Again, travelling distance could have been the determining factor, yet Brazil and India had attracted considerable backing in recent games, so we marked it down instead to the previous lacklustre performances.

Luckily for the North Americans, the relative few who did make the effort were vocal in the extreme and contributed to the only goal of the match.

A scrappy affair in truth, it looped almost directly in from an otherwise unassuming corner of the world. Of course, the Sillysoft team won't have been bothered by that at all. They may have played a Risk-y game at times, but ultimately the dice rolled in their favour.

The Canadians' attacking unit had made the breakthrough and Lux Touch's Blue army celebrated like they had conquered the world. Huzzah!
