Developers World Championship: Match Report - Poland v Iceland (Group A)
|
POLAND Kissing Frenzy (Tequila Mobile)

VS ICELAND TiltaFun (On The Rocks)

Unbeknownst to the watching crowd, a crack troupe of energetic, colourful, and most attractive cheerleaders had been flown in overnight by the organiser to entertain. This could signal only one thing.

Peter Stringfellow was in temporary charge? No, stupid, round one of the group stages was complete and it was time to usher in the next set of round-robin contests.

Every nation at our inaugural iPhone app jamboree had now participated in one full match, and so the heat was, in particular for all those early losers.

And so set against this backdrop, Poland marched onto the pitch tonight to face the chilling prospect of an Icelandic backlash.

Future Fight had earned the Poles a creditable draw in the always emotionally-charged tournament curtain-raiser. Could developer Tequila Mobile and its intoxicating iOS adaptation of the IMGA-nominated Kissing Frenzy pucker up sufficiently to earn three points?

Or would On The Rocks’ TiltaFun tip the balance in Iceland’s favour?

We’d soon discover the truth, for kick off was nigh...

Kick Off: 7.30pm, 16th June The critical view: Perhaps mindful of the opening day setback, the Scandinavians began the match cautiously, deploying two moving platforms as protection for the back four.

Because of this inherently conservative formation, the Pac-Man-cum-Labyrinth tilter couldn’t take advantage of its clever accelerometer controls, and struggled to feed the cute, candy monster upfront.

After an innocuous aerial challenge at a corner had Kissing Frenzy’s hero plummeting to the ground, a drop ball was contested. In the event, TiltaFun’s Bronze decided matters and promptly led to a disputed opener.

From the restart, the Red and White army passed and played its way down the middle, taking full advantage of the four-way multiplayer opportunity to land the equaliser. Naturally, the striker blew a kiss to each and every critic during the celebratory jig.

Shot for shot, power-up for power-up, 50 levels for 60 levels, header for header, these two resolute European nations countered quickly at every opportunity.

Half time: Poland 1 – 1 Iceland The Fans’ 45: In desperately close times, it's often up to the supporters in attendance to act as the twelfth man, the rabble-rouser, the inspiration. Unfortunately for On The Rocks and Iceland, this mass exaltation never quite materialised.

Poland's loyal backers swept the team to glory, swayed by the high score tables and integration of Facebook Connect. Social networking had, therefore, proved pivotal tonight, but would it be instrumental in later rounds, too?
