HONDURAS Paratroopers: Air Assault (Software Factory)

VS FINLAND Angry Birds (Rovio Mobile)

Aim, shoot, destroy. That was the basic premise behind the two combatants in Wednesday’s lunchtime affair here at the iPhone Game Developers World Championship.

The soldiers in question hailed from the respective and respected military arms of Honduras and Finland.

Descending menacingly on to the pitch for the Central Americans was Paratroopers: Air Assault, a turret-based, tap-to-fire shooter from Software Factory.

Meanwhile, flying in from Scandinavia to challenge the parachutists in aerial artillery, we had arguably the most commercially successful iPhone app to date. They’re mean, they’re talented, they are the Angrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry Birds. By Rovio, of course.

Overseeing the 12.30pm kick off was decorated Italian referee, Brigadier Pierluigi Colleen Roonio.

Kick Off: 12.30pm, 16th June The critical view: Simple, controlled, and carefully constructed gameplay dominated proceedings from the first whistle, although both teams were more than willing to shoot on sight in the opening 20 minutes.

Angry Birds’ slingshot delivery from direct and indirect free-kicks caused pandemonium in the Honduran penalty area on several occasions, indeed Paratroopers: Air Assault’s only real defence against this bombardment was its OpenFeint integration and more than 30 available achievements.

They couldn't keep up the rearguard action for ever though and following a brilliantly-worked move on the Bird's left-wing, Honduras ultimately conceded the opener courtesy of the Finnish fighter’s well-merited Silver Award.

Its puzzling purity had allowed the northern Europeans to settle into a rhythm, the three-pronged attack supplying Facebook, Twitter, and Crystal networking features with ease.

With the Scandinavians unable to capitalise on this increased possession, there was an impasse in the heart of midfield, as Finland’s unlocking of more powerful birds was rapidly cancelled out by the opposition’s weapons upgrades.

Half time: Honduras 0 – 1 Finland The Fans’ 45: Unsurprisingly, when news spread that Finland's golden app was battling it out this lunchtime, its fans soon flocked.

Propelled by the incredible 135 levels on offer, the Finnish flier jetted down the right channel and from an acute angle extended its lead. Almost from the restart, an identical manoeuvre proved successful again - a real feather in the cap for Rovio.

After amassing a three goal cushion, the Finns clearly felt it was a case of job done and a little complacency set in, allowing the Hondurans to grab a consolation in added time.
