POLAND Future Fight (Bloober Team)

VS
CANADA Dark Void Zero (Other Ocean) After a glittering opening ceremony at a packed PG iStadium featuring plenty of bubbly, some silly string, and our mate Kelly, the stage was set for the prestigious iPhone Game Developers World Championship to begin.

The opening game pitted Poland's slick looking strategy battler Future Fight of Bloober Team against Other Ocean's retro rehash Dark Void Zero which swapped its Capcom colours to fly the Canadian flag of Other Ocean. Though neither may have been the biggest names in the competition a lively encounter was expected and duly delivered.

Equipped with more turns than a Brazilian inside-left, Bloober Team's tactically astute battle game would probably have expected to power its way to victory. However, the classic action on offer from Dark Void Zero's flying winger, Rusty, has proved its staying power on the big stage and the whole match offered an intriguing battle of youth vs experience.

Kick Off: 3pm, 11th June The critical view: With its retro stylings (think video game equivalent of mullets and sideburns) and old skool platforming action Dark Void Zero broke the deadlock early on with the critical audience, using its pacy action and tight controls to secure an early lead.

This literal blast from the past left the Poles reeling and the Canadians went on to double their lead thanks to the addition of new multiplayer features and achievements.

Although it's fair to say Future Fight undeniably looked good at times, with some gorgeous visuals and a few neat tactical tricks, in the hardcore critics' eyes there was only one winner in the half.

Half time: Poland 0 – 2 Canada
The fans fight back: Whilst Bloober Team were down after the first 45, they certainly weren't out, and as the influence switched to voices from the terraces it soon became clear that this would be a game of two halves as a rejuvenated Future Fight was clearly the fans' favourite, rapidly pulling one back as the votes poured in.

With full time approaching the Poles then drew level as their modern presentation and accessible strategy proved far more popular with the fans, and but for a late flurry of hardcore supporters nominating Dark Void Zero the Poles might even have gone on to edge the tie.

Ultimately, though, it ended like the majority of opening games, with honours even and points shared between two very different games. Full time: Poland 2 – 2 Canada
