Rumour: Apple seeds next-gen iPhone prototype packing a variation of the new iPad's A5X processor
Plus, next-gen iPod touch possibly in the works
According to Apple-loving website 9to5Mac, the Cupertino-based firm has internally seeded a prototype of the next-generation iPhone, which currently sports the same design as the iPhone 4 and 4S.
This design is likely just to discourage leaks and other dubious practices, though, as Apple's forthcoming iPhone is expected to ditch its predecessor's design.
9to5Mac believes that the next-gen iPhone prototype has been created to test a variation of the new iPad's A5X processor. The A5X was specifically built to power the new tablet's Retina display, so simply plonking the chip into a new iPhone would be a silly move.
The chip that is currently being tested is said to be a variation of the A5X's S5L8945X architecture and to house 1GB of RAM.
Crank the volume upApple is also purportedly working on a new iPod touch - the only device not to receive an overhaul last year.
According to a file found inside an internal build of iOS 5.1, a fifth-generation iPod touch (labelled iPod 5,1 internally) is in the works. There aren't any other details regarding this possible iPod touch refresh, but we presume it'll involve a new processor.
The current iPod touch model is internally labelled 4,1, so the jump to 5,1 could indicate a sizable revamp.
