AppleCare: iPhone 4 update won’t fix antenna issue

Signal fault not a software issue

AppleCare: iPhone 4 update won’t fix antenna issue
|

Gizmodo has phoned up, pestered, and nagged Apple’s support line this morning, and got a final and definitive answer on the upcoming software update for iPhone 4 users.

The update will cosmetically change the way your iPhone 4 displays how much signal it's transmitting and receiving, making the bars more accurate, but the firmware upgrade will not magically fix your dodgy antenna problem.

Some iPhone 4 users have found their signal strength and wi-fi speeds greatly deteriorating when the device is held in a specific fashion. Apple is standing firm on the matter: either quit holding the phone like that, or cough up and buy a case or bumper.

Based on Steve Jobs’s ambiguous emails, some customers were led to believe that the upcoming software update would fix the issue, but AppleCare has confirmed that the dodgy fault is here to stay, and no download will be solving the issue.

You won’t have much luck taking the thing back to Apple, either, as customer policy is no refunds and definitely no free bumpers.
