No free bumpers for you

The headlines following the release of the iPhone 4 have been equal parts evangelising and woeful, as some users have found their new wonder phone losing signal when held in a certain fashion.

While Apple CEO Steve Jobs has responded in his own ways to the supposed Death Grip, Apple is training its employees to deal with the fiasco in deadly efficient form, hoping to get customers back out the door or off the phone without replacing their iPhone. And definitely without giving away a free reception-rescuing bumper.

This comes from an internal document sent around to Apple staff, and leaked by Boy Genius Report.

To deal with discouraged customers in four easy steps, simply tell them that the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best Apple’s ever shipped, gripping almost any mobile will reduce its reception, just stop touching that part of the phone or buy a case. Thank you, come again.

And, finally, “We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers – DON’T promise a free bumper to customers.” Emphasis is all Apple.

No mention is made of the possible software fix that AppleInsider sniffed out, and Jobs alluded to. Maybe the problem is not so easily fixable after all.
