iPad US launch revealed, April 3rd debut confirmed
UK release expected just weeks later
Apple has today confirmed the iPad will make its debut at US retail on April 3rd, the firm releasing a statement that reveals it will begin taking pre-orders for the device from its online store this time next week.
What's more, the company has also confirmed its plans to roll out units in overseas territories – the UK joined by Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, and Switzerland – by the end of April, though it is yet to commit itself to a specific date.
It was initially believed the first iPads would launch in the States at some point this month, though recent online chatter suggests a hold-up in manufacturing forced Apple to push the release back.
As it is, only the wi-fi models will be available in the States from day one, the 3G equipped units expected to join them on the shelves in the latter half of April.
"iPad is something completely new," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs, following the announcement.
"We're excited for customers to get their hands on this magical and revolutionary product and connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before."
As expected, the pricing structure set out by Apple during the device's unveiling remains in place, the base level wi-fi only 16GB edition coming in at $499, rising to $599 for the 32GB edition and $699 for the 64GB edition.
The 3G units, when available, effectively add a further $130 to the price, retailing for $629 (16GB), $729 (32GB), and $829 (64GB) accordingly.
Rumoured UK prices are still up in the air, though Apple has stated it will clarify the issue at some point next month.
