But Apple will never be the handheld winner

Analyst Pachter: the iPad is a gaming device

Speaking on his GameTrailers show Pach Attack, analyst Michael Pachter has reiterated his view that the iPod touch is a gaming device, adding that the iPad will be too.

Pachter characterises Apple as having 'stumbled' into the games industry by releasing the iPod touch. An afterthought to the iPhone and secondary in Apple's list of priorities to the iPod nano, the touch has somehow allowed Apple to compete with Sony and Nintendo more or less without trying.

Apple's prospects are limited, however, by the fact that it doesn't have an internal development studio - despite rumours to the contrary in the past. Without such a thing, Apple will struggle to compete with the more dedicated hardware manufacturers.

Relying on third-party development is all very well up to a point, but it's unlikely to lead to lasting domination. Look at Gizmondo, says Mr P.

“It's hard to be successful unless you have some differentiated software to drive your device. I'm not sure Apple's going to be the winner as far as a pure game console. They will be the winner as far as a multi-use, multi-purpose device.”
