Tears of the Machine: creating immersive story telling on a mobile device

A stranded machine in the midst of chaos, alone against the hordes of enemies along the way. The faint memory of a girl enshrouds the machine's past. This is the premise of Tears of the Machine.

A survival arena shooter set in a dark future where the world we know has ended, you play as X42 - a machine that wanders the desolate lands chased by the countless enemies, trying to unravel the mystery behind the world he has found himself in and the girl haunting his mind.

Creating an immersive atmosphere and deep narrative was the goal of X App Studio Group when they started this project 3 years ago. It set out on its development route with this focus in mind while making it immediate enough for the audience to grasp. The gameplay is simple and fast paced: the player needs to survive the many waves that come after the main playable character. With each cleared wave, the game reveals the next part of the narrative.

X App Studio Group's goal was to give the story a true cinematic feeling, using voice over narration and detailed artwork in order to breathe life into the world of Tears of the Machine. A calm and soothing voice gives the player a moment of respite after surviving the chaos experienced within the game.

The developer wanted to emphasize the game atmosphere by bringing a lot of concept to a simple formula, with the intent to, in a way, deconstruct the average mobile gaming experience by creating something that raises the bar in terms of lore and engagement. With Tears of the Machine: Episode 01 as X App Studio Group's first major release, the team hopes they have found a way for the audience to interact with an experience that will hopefully stick around even after fitting their mobile device back into their pockets.

You can download Tears of the Machine for $1.99 / £1.49 now [iTunes link], with a prologue for the game also being available and costing you nothing at all [iTunes link].
