Warbits iPad, thumbnail 1
Warbits fits snugly into the Advance Wars strategy mould. It's turn-based, it's got a gorgeous cartoon look, and underneath its bright facade lurk some impressive ideas.

But this is a game that's built from the ground up for mobile, and with than in mind it offers shorter, tighter scenarios, with a focus on base-capturing and out-thinking your opponent.

Throw in some multiplayer, and you're left with a fully fledged premium strategy game that fits comfortably into your pocket. And that's something fans of the genre have been screaming for for a good long while.

Well this sounds promising

It is, and it's a game that lives up to its promise as well. It might have the casual bearing of an App Store game, but there's so much going on here that it's certainly not an experience that more casual gamers are going to enjoy.

You're in command of a series of troops, each with its own strengths and weaknesses, and need to repel the advances of an invading army of similarly matched units.

You've got tanks, infantry, flying machines, and support drones, all of which you need to use in order to conquer the enemy and rub your victory in their smarmy face.

Everything is wonderfully balanced, and it's easy to get overwhelmed if you're unsure of which unit to send where. There are fuel and health point considerations too, and neutral cities you can conquer to boost the coffers or your force.

There's a real focus on clever strategy here. Weight of numbers is rarely enough to win the day - instead you need to think about the position of your troops and support units, and figure out ways to protect your army while still taking out your foes.

The scenarios you're pitted against get more challenging the deeper you get into the game, and anyone worried about the dumbing down of the genre for a mobile audience will be pleasantly surprised.

Okay, anything else I should know?

Well there's a rich vein of slightly bonkers humour running through the game as well, and the addition of multiplayer means you can always jump in and have a scrap even if you've finished the single player.

This isn't a softening of the strategy genre for mobile, it's just a reshaping of it, and it works wonderfully well.

If you're a fan of Advance Wars, or you're just looking for a meatier experience than the likes of Clash of Clans have to offer, then you're in for a treat.
