Free-to-play Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar coming soon for PC and iPad

Electronic Arts made a surprising announcement at San Diego Comic-Con: gamers will soon have the chance to step back into Ultima's kingdom of Britannia with the upcoming release of Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar.

The free-to-play title (a reboot of the 1985 classic RPG Ultima IV) will be playable on the PC or iPad, and features familiar MMORPG classes like Fighter and Mage.

Although the game is only in the beta stages, PC Magazine reports that Ultima Forever will arrive later this year.

Collecting Virtues is a virtue

To help support its free-to-play status, Ultima Forever will feature in-app purchases. EA explains that these purchases are not mandatory and will be limited to aesthetic items and resources that will help players progress through the game faster.

Interestingly, the original creator of Ultima, Richard Garriott, will not be involved in the production of Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar.

Garriott and his new company Portalarium are currently busy working on a separate MMORPG that's slated to be "the spiritual successor of the Ultima series."

Players interested in Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar can sign up for beta testing on the game’s website.
