Trex VIP review - A classic card game you might not have heard of before

There are a few classic card games on the App Store, but I'll be honest, I'd never even heard of Trex. So it was pleasant to discover that it's actually pretty damn good.

Now, this digital version of the game might not be the most polished experience in the world, yet the game underneath is definitely worth checking out.

It takes a little while to get used to, and the tutorial isn't the greatest, but in the end it's definitely the sort of thing I'd like to see on the App Store.

Contract killers

The game sees four players playing it out with a simple deck of 52 playing cards. Depending on the mode you choose, there are different ways to play.

The simple mode is the best place to start. Here you're playing to complete five different contracts. These involve getting rid of your cards in a variety of different ways.

Sometimes you need to make sure you don't end up with the king of hearts. Sometimes getting diamonds is going to cost you points. Other times everyone is trying to get rid of all of their cards, with whoever does it first earning the most.

Trex VIP - A simple game in progress

Each round sees you playing a single card. Usually whichever card in the pile of four is the highest, the player that laid that takes all four of them.

It sounds simple enough, but there's actually a surprising amount of tactical thinking here. Sometimes it's a good idea to take the cards, sometimes it's a good idea to make sure you don't. Remembering what other players have laid down, and figuring out what they have left is key to victory.

It's tough to begin with, that's for sure, and you're going to lose a lot of games until things start to click in your brain. Figuring out your mistakes for the first time actually feels really, really good.

Card to get it right

No, the tutorial isn't great, and no the presentation is not interesting in the slightest. But if you love card games that have nothing to do with goblins or wizards, then it's the sort of thing that's going to sink its teeth into you.

If not, well there's nothing here that's going to change your mind. Trex VIP is a game that's not exactly going to divide people. You'll either love it, or, to be honest, you'll not even blink at its existence. But if you do love it, my oh my, you're going to love it.

It's not the best looking game in the world, but if you've a passion for the classics, give it a go
