Imagine Atari classic 2D puzzle platformer Another World redesigned today. That's the impression I'm getting from PlayWay's The Way.

But it can't just be hopeful nostalgia that's fuelling the The Way's momentum on Kickstarter (the funding goal has nearly been met in less than a week).

The pretty pixels depict a rich and dangerous alien world that offers as many scenic views as it does strange flora and fauna to survive.

The environments range from lush jungle temples to weird, almost Geiger-esque structures. But, unlike in Another World, the protagonist didn't end up on this planet by accident.

The story follows a space explorer who can't accept the death of his wife. While on an expedition, he finds ancient writings that tell of life beyond death and pursues the secrets that the planet holds.

Starting his journey with a laser gun, later on the explorer acquires mysterious alien artifacts that allow for telekinesis, a reflective shield, and teleportation.

These new abilities play into evasive combat as much as they do the puzzles.

It all seems and looks very promising. Unfortunately, the initial funding goal of $15,000 only secures The Way for a PC release.

Of course, we would love to see this on iOS and Android. Luckily, reaching a $25,000 stretch goal means ports to smartphones, tablets, and Ouya will happen.

You know what you have to do. If you want to see The Way on mobile and tablets then consider pledging towards it, or spreading the word.
