In the main, card battlers are, well, a bit rubbish.

Most of them involve you not doing anything while cards bounce around the screen and numbers flash. And then you have to pay some money.

As card battlers go, though, newly soft-launched game The Gate - from American McGee's Spicy Horse studio - isn't painfully bad.

In fact, it's a decent-looking romp through the bowels of hell. In The Gate, you smack a bunch of monsters in the face, collecting their corpses in the form of cards, and using them to fight more powerful monsters.

You actually have some input into what happens next, too.

You can control the various disciples at your command, tapping on the screen to move them around and choosing when they use their special powers.

There are different strategies and elements to employ, and everything looks quite nice (in a blocky last-gen sort of a way).

The Gate is out in New Zealand right now for free. We'll let you know when it surfaces on the UK and US App Stores.
