Substantial Games soft-launched its online multiplayer RTS The Ember Conflict in select countries on iOS today.

You can download it for free if you an iTunes account in one of the following countries: Canada, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, and New Zealand.

The idea of The Ember Conflict is to provide tactical battles that you can play with one hand, and in short sessions (between two to five minutes).

This is what has led to Substantial Games to refer to the game as "Toilet Tactics". The idea being that it's the kind of game you can play while, you know, doing your business. Pooping.

On a more serious note, it's intended to be an RTS experience specifically for touchscreen. And so, rather than set down waypoints as in StarCraft, you draw lines with the touchscreen for your units.

But it's not too serious. After all, this is a game in which you can employ Pugs of War on your side. Plus, you can ride raptors into battle.

It allows for quick, intense 1v1 battles, or you can play 2v2 with some strangers or friends. And, if you're not ready for the online world, there are bots to practice against.

As you progress, you'll collect units and craft new equipment for them. By the numbers, there are 18 units to collect and 64 sets of gear to equip them all with. But you can only take six units as a single squad.

The Ember Conflict

That should be everything you need to know. If you're in one of the participating countries go ahead and download The Ember Conflict right now.

Bear in mind that Substantial will be updating the current build with improvements and additions over time.

Oh, and when the game is fully launched in a few months time, it will be available on iOS and Android. And, yep, it has cross-platform multiplayer.
