Gotta match 'em all

Starbeard has achieved the unachievable - it's made match three remotely interesting again. This absolutely flooded mobile genre has been desperate for refreshment for years, and Starbeard looks set to do just that.

You're still matching three or more identical objects - in this instance stars - but the difference here is that you have to create these matches yourself by dragging the stars about and placing them together. It's a bit like Peggle in that respect.

Also dotted about are enemies who will stick you if they get too close. Fortunately, successfully matching three stars allows you to create a bodyguard of your own to fight back.

Each different star colour creates a different unit, and each has their own attack. Some attack all units horizontally, while others just provide huge damage to a single unit.

The best part is, you can combine same units to create a mighty boss version of them which will tear apart the enemies in your way. At this moment in time you're probably thinking "where's the challenge?" Well that's because we didn't mention that every three moves new enemies and stars scroll down from the top, so you have to ensure you're being smart with each one.

Because if you're not, the board will be filled and you'll be overrun, losing the level.

Starbeard is a fun, innovative, and pretty blend of match three and RPG, and we're so grateful it exists for its innovation alone. We'll keep you posted as it nears launch.

In the meantime, a massive congratulations to Starbeard for winning third place in the Big Indie Pitch at Apps World, and good luck to the developer with the launch!
