Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions

Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions is a simple side-scrolling blaster that does nothing out of the ordinary. There's a bit of base building, a bit of jumping around, and a bunch of Stormtroopers to shoot in the face.

It's obviously aimed at a younger audience, and functionally it's perfectly solid. It's just a shame it doesn't show quite as much ingenuity as the cartoon that inspired it.

Rebel well
To begin with you can only pick one character, Ezra. He's got a catapulty laser gun thing, and has to leap around a series of levels offing imperial soldiers and freeing citizens to come and hang out at your rebel hideout.

There are a few levels of this, and then if you want to keep playing you'll need to buy the other characters – Kanan who has a lightsabre, and Sabine who drops slightly ineffectual mines.

All of the levels follow a similar pattern. Bounce around, grab some collectibles, blast or slice the bad guys, and get to the end before your health runs out.

There are some twists here and there, like sections that fence you in and force you to kill everything before you can move on, or sequences that see you stomping around in a walker.

And it's all quite good. And you've probably seen it all before. There are lasers to dodge, moving platforms, alarms to shoot out, and hidden areas to explore. Like we've been doing in platform games for decades.

Bit of a trek
There's nothing wrong with Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions really, but it feels a bit like a missed opportunity.

There's fun to be had here, but it's tempered by a lack of any real spark.

If you're a fan of the cartoon then you'll probably get something out of it, but this certainly isn't the game to kickstart the Star Wars franchise on mobile.

Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions

A reasonably well put together Star Wars game, but it lacks the imagination to really recommend
