Sky Patrol iPad, thumbnail 1
Sky Patrol is a bonkers, one-finger arcade swipe-and-tap-athon with plenty of big explosions, bright colours, and frantic battles to the death.

It's bright and breezy, and despite it's cartoon graphics and cheery presentation, there's a sizeable challenge lurking here.

It's not super original, but the line-drawing madness is simple enough that it tightens its compulsion loop mighty quick.

Bomb them all

You're tasked with protecting a number of aeroplanes from incoming enemy fire, using all the weapons at your disposal to keep them safe until they reach their destination.

You fire rockets by pressing in the firing zone at the bottom of the screen, then dragging a path to your target. Heat-seakers are best used against planes, while normal rockets are better for taking out their enemy counterparts.

Bombs are are dropped with a tap. But the screen is constantly moving, so you need to make sure you're targeting the right area, and not dropping all of your ordnance into a field.

To swap between weapons you tap on icons along the side of the screen. It's a little fiddly sometimes, but adds to the tension as you try and keep on top of the chaos unfolding in front of you.

As you play you unlock other weapons. Drones fly out in front of your convoy to soak up some fire, and splash damage barrels are useful against boats and submarines.

There are more powerful super attacks to unlock as well that lay down a barrage of fire to help you out of sticky situations.

It's the only way to be sure

Sky Patrol hangs tightly to the right side of frantic. It's never quite overwhelming, and it adds enough new toys to play with as you fight that you always feel like you're in charge of the situation.

Beyond the fraught nature of the violence there's not much else, but if you're looking for a quick-dip game full of explosions and good cheer, then it's well worth a look.

A bright and gleefully chaotic line-drawing blaster, Sky Patrol is a neat little diversion
