Stewart Hogarth (aka Smiling Bag) proved with the ZX Spectrum-like I Am Level that new and entertaining spins on retro game designs were possible.

Now, with his latest game Sid the Snake, he's proving that once again.

It's a twist on the mobile classic Snake (which you could argue for or against being retro) in which you're given three minutes to eat a mouse.

Sid, in this case, is an actual snake, so you've got to help him eat eggs to shed his skin to become big enough to swallow the rodent before the timer is up.

Simple enough, except the controls give you limited steer of this wiggling blighter.

Sid moves automatically in a clockwise spin, you see. When you touch (and hold) the screen he'll go anti-clockwise. You have to dab the screen to create a squirming motion, moving around the screen.

With each level you progress to new elements are added. Such as the asteroids that fly across the screen (so, we're in space?). And the explosion points that insta-kill Sid if he collides with them.

The game comes with two modes: Hard and Harder. The latter option adding those extra elements earlier on.

And, in true Snake fashion, with each egg you eat, Sid's tail grows and his movement becomes faster. I've barely lasted a minute, so if you can get all the way to the end and three minutes you deserve a medal.

You can download Sid the Snake for free on the App Store and Google Play right now.
