Sid Meier's Ace Patrol swoops onto the App Store in a hail of machine gun fire

2K Games's assault on the App Store continues unabated.

Last week, we got Haunted Hollow. This week, we're being treated to Sid Meier's Ace Patrol, an aerial skirmish game set against the backdrop of World War I.

Designed by the legend behind such games as Civilization and Railroad Tycoon, Ace Patrol involves your taking control of a group of crack pilots.

It's up to you to clear the airways of enemy planes in a series of tightly paced scraps across the skies of Europe.

While the skirmishes are turn based, you give out orders to your pilots using a clever system of manoeuvres and actions. Arrows on the screen indicate where you can go and at whom you can fire, and all you need to do is tap one to select it.

You'll upgrade your biplanes and pilots over the course of 120 airborne missions, learning loops and rolls and earning experimental technology that'll give you the edge over your foes.

Alongside the deep campaign, there's a pass-the-handset multiplayer mode. There's supposed to be an asynchronous online mode powered by Game Center, too, although that doesn't appear to be working at the moment.

Sid Meier's Ace Patrol is available from the App Store right now for the handsome price of nothing at all. You can read our interview with Mr Meier about the game here.
