What is Shin Megami Tensei?

Ah, so this is your first dive into a Shin Megami Tensei game, eh? Well you're in luck, the beloved series is finally free on mobile and it's pretty darn fun.

Here you'll be able to get to grips with the classic Shin Megami Tensei battle system, the cast of demons, and some brand new functions introduced in Dx2.

You'll quickly learn that Shin Megami Tensei is a hardcore JRPG, complete with party building, turn based battles, and dungeon exploration that you'll be able to sink hours into.

Devil Downloaders

You play the part of a Devil Downloader, or a Dx2. Get it? Because it's like an equation, D times 2, because there's two Ds in the acronym for Devil Downloader…

Yeah it's an awful name but I guess it works. The immediate cast is comprised of yourself (a generic male or female protagonist), a trigger-happy Dx2 who will be there to help out, and a whole bunch of characters at the HQ.

This includes a loli maid who asks if you wish to kill yourself, an otaku Shrine Maiden, and even a pretty boy Russian priest, just for good measure. All of them will help you on your journey, even if they act as menus with personality.

Demon party

You'll bring together a party of demons in order to fight against, well, other demons. Demons are fickle creatures, but that means you might be able to get them to join your side.

You can chat to demons in battle to recruit them, if you can convince them, or you can summon demons with premium currency, and even fuse demons you've already caught to create brand new ones.

There's a variety of ways to get your party stronger, but most important is the elemental abilities and affinities of your party, which will dictate how well you'll do in battle more than even your level.

Organising at HQ

Back at HQ you'll be able to chat to Megakin, a YouTuber (sorry, they're called MegaTubers in this world) and he'll give you general advice about missions, demons, and how to build up your strength.

Of course the main meat of things will be ploughing through the story missions, which are mostly just battles sandwiched between chat about demons and Tokyo.

Still though, you'll be even stronger in battles if you visit HQ often, fuse demons, summon new ones, and ensure your Dx2 skills are all upgraded and unlocked to make you as fearsome as possible.

Demon photoshoot

I have always, ALWAYS wanted to get up close and personal with SMT demons. Always. And now, in Dx2 Liberation, I finally have the opportunity.

If you take a look at your demons, you might notice you case use the AR functions of your mobile device to make the demons appear in the room in front of you. Simply aim the camera at the floor so it can scan and understand a flat space, then tap the floor to summon the demon.

From here you can move around it, and take photos with it. Get as creative as possible, as there's loads of things you can do! Unfortunately, I am yet to unlock Mara for a photoshoot. Soon…
