One of our jobs here at Pocket Gamer is to sieve through the hundreds of apps that hit the App Store and Google Play every single day, and unearth those glittering gems.

Lately, though, we've been giving you the chance to have YOUR say, too. Basically, we've been giving you the opportunity to tell us your favourite game from a shortlist of the week's best releases.

This week's votes have been counted (and recounted), and we have a winner: Ridiculous Fishing.

When Vlambeer's Ridiculous Fishing finally surfaced in the App Store waters, it sent waves of excitement through the mobile gaming community.

Much of the widespread elation could be attributed to one thing: we'd been waiting for this quirky aquatic auto-runner / shooter / collect-'em-up to arrive on iOS since 2009. Yes, 2009.

In fact, given this madcap Flash conversion's long and tortuous development history, many thought the game would never see the light of day.

Cast away

A round of Ridiculous Fishing consists of three different gameplay elements. First, you cast off and guide your sinking hook as deep into the ocean as possible, making sure not to touch any fish as you go.

When you eventually hook something, you then swing your lure into as many fish as possible to ensure a decent haul.

Once you've dragged your catch to the surface, the scaly treasure rockets into the air, leaving you to blast the flying fish out of the sky.

Needless to say, we were hooked by Ridiculous Fishing's inventive angling antics. And judging by your Game of the Week votes, it doesn't look like we're the only ones.
