Hockey and tower defence aren't exactly easy bedfellows, but iBear has taken the two, chucked in some monsters, and blended the whole thing together to create Overtime Rush.

Unfortunately the game's interesting combination of elements doesn't manage to balance out its grind-heavy progression or general lack of variety.

High-sticking

Overtime Rush starts out pretty well. The cartoony enemies trying to ruin your day are incredibly charming, hockey sticks and all.

The towers you place at set spots in each level can be upgraded to improve their effectiveness. You need to use spells like bombs and mines to mix-up the action as well.

And additional upgrades and levels become available as you score points.

The problem is that all of this gets dull pretty quickly. Fighting the same enemies over and over, with only the occasional new one thrown into the mix, starts to feel mundane.

After that point, everything becomes an unwelcome grind.

Unsportsmanlike conduct

The free-to-play system the game employs is a little annoying as well. The only thing you can use premium currency for is to equip spells at the beginning of a level. You can earn more of these gems by playing each day and slaying random enemies.

But level progression is tied to profile rank. To begin with that isn't so bad. You might have to replay a level once or twice before ranking up and unlocking the next one.

At about level five all of that progress grinds to a halt. You'll have to either replay levels several times over or burn through some premium currency to equip yourself with more powerful spells.

Overtime Rush does show promise, and it deserves praise for at least trying something new with its free-to-play system.

Ultimately though, it just isn't all that exciting. This is a mix of ideas that can't quite break the mould it finds itself trapped in.

Overtime Rush

Overtime Rush is a decent tower defence game that relies too much on grinding
