Modern Combat Versus: 7 things we expect to see from Gameloft's new FPS

Gameloft has tantalised us all by announcing Modern Combat Versus, the sixth iteration of its popular militaristic FPS series, with precious little information beyond its title and a few assets.

Those assets include a brief 10 second video of assorted gameplay snippets and some artwork. It's not a lot to go on, but we think we can piece together some interesting pointers as to the direction the series is going.

Here's what we're expecting from Modern Combat Versus.

Massively multiplayer

One of the few details Gameloft has confirmed concerning Modern Combat Versus is that it's "focused exclusively on multiplayer gaming". Indeed, the French publisher follows up that statement by claiming that it's "designed to host eSport events".

As the name suggests, Modern Combat Versus will be a highly competitive, exclusively multiplayer experience. Given the eSports focus, we're expecting its controls to be extremely tight and skill based. It'll be fascinating to see how Gameloft balances that with making an accessible mobile game.

No single player campaign

It's sounds like an obvious point given the multiplayer focus, but it's worth driving home. Gameloft's language suggests that there will be no traditional single player element to Modern Combat Versus.

In other words, there'll be no campaign. If that's what you played Modern Combats 1 through to 5 for, you're in for a sharp disappointment.

Futuristic setting

The limited gameplay footage and art assets that we've seen point to a near-future setting for Modern Combat Versus. This is evidenced by the funkily armoured protagonists (and antagonist?).

It's not just how this armour looks that gives us that future feeling. It promises to have a very real impact on the way Modern Combat Versus plays...

Wall running ahoy!

What is "Velocity Tactical Assault"? We're not certain, but it seems to relate to that futuristic armour we just mentioned.

If we were to hazard a guess, I'd say it relates to the wall running skills glimpsed in the video. Yep, it seems as if you'll be able to scamper across vertical surfaces - as well as survive long drops, as evidenced by the shot of a squad jumping off a roof (or was that a helicopter?).

Levels should be bigger and more complex

Those additional traversal skills suggest something about Modern Combat Versus's level design, too. They're almost certain to be a lot bigger and more multi-layered than previous Modern Combat games.

Wall running promises to open up rooftops to some parkour action. Will we see some kind of boosted jump facility to that end, too? It wouldn't surprise us.

Hints of Destiny, Titanfall, and CoD: Infinite Warfare

Of course, Gameloft is well known for its judicious borrowing of ideas from established console series. Modern Combat Versus shouldn't be any different, and we're already picking up on some of its reference points from a trio of futuristic multiplayer shooters.

The funky, colourful future-armour design reminds us of Destiny, while the wall running and augmented ability concepts call to mind Titanfall and the imminent Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Release date and platforms

The last fact that Gameloft has confirmed is that Modern Combat Versus will be hitting iOS, Android, and Windows some time in 2017.
