MechWarrior: Tactical Command stomps onto iPad

It's been three long months since we went hands-on with MechWarrior: Tactical Command, but it's finally arrived on the iPad.

If you didn't catch Will's preview, and can't be bothered to open that link in the opening paragraph, MechWarrior: Tactical Command is an intense RTS based in the BattleTech universe.

BattleTech is a popular wargaming franchise - and by war games, we mean the physical strategic boardgames rather than the video game variety.

The futuristic fiction revolves around giant walking tanks with enormous guns letting loose on one another - and that's precisely what MachWarrior: Tactical Command lets you do from a zoomed-out top-down perspective.

You take command of a mech squad through 21 missions set across three planets, issuing commands and fighting other mechs.

Strong touch

Of the many nice touches we appreciated in our hands-on, the standout one has to be that each of the mech's limbs is recognised as a separate entity with its own health bar.

This means that your gun-arm can be blown off, thus halving your firepower. Likewise, your legs could be severely damaged, which would, naturally enough, affect your mobility.

Here's hoping the developer has addressed some of the control issues we had with the game at the time of our preview, mind. With three months extra of development time, there's every chance that it has.

Stay tuned for our review to find out for sure.

MechWarrior: Tactical Command is out now on the App Store for £6.99 / $9.99.
