At this time last summer, Level-5's CEO Akihiro Hino announced that the upcoming sixth Professor Layton game would be Hershel Layton's final adventure.

While the globetrotting archaeologist might be hanging up his top hat for good, Level-5 isn't quite done with the Professor Layton franchise of puzzle games.

Case in point: the recently announced Layton 7 which is due out for iOS, Android, and the 3DS.

Details on Layton 7 are scarce, but it looks like a radical departure from the previous style of DS and 3DS puzzle games.

In fact, it looks rather underwhelming from what was shown and appears to have more in common with the mini-games in a mainline Layton title than it does with Gold Award-winners like Professor Layton and the Curious Village or Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask.

Yes curiously, it carries the (perhaps working) title of Layton 7, which suggests that it will be a main series installment.

Similar to the announcement of Breath of Fire VI for smartphones and tablets, the western fan reaction to Layton 7 has been anything but positive. We think it's too early to know for sure what Level-5 has planned for this 'latest entry in the Professor Layton series', so we'll be watching it closely.

Layton 7 doesn't have a release date yet, and there's no word as to whether Level-5 plans to release it for western markets or if it'll stay in Japan.
