There's something genuinely heart warming about finding a good action game on iOS. One that understands the limitations of the hardware, works within them, and creates something exciting.

And that's exactly what Implosion - Never Lose Hope does. It's a breathless hack and slasher with impressive graphics and a control system that works brilliantly.

Hack and shoot

The game sees you playing a mech-suited human stomping through a post apocalyptic wasteland. You've got a big sword, a gun, and the ability to slide out of the way if any of the slobbering mutants get too close.

You get super moves too, that power up as you mash the attack button. The combo system is based on the rhythm of your taps, with more powerful attacks chaining together if you wait a little between blows.

The levels are about five minutes long, and while they're entirely linear there's enough variety that you won't get bored. There are sections where you're defending your base, others where the perspective shifts to give a side-scrolling feel to proceedings, and huge boss battles as well.

To fire your gun you slide a finger over the chunky attack button, and there are weapon upgrades to pick up as you battle through the claustrophobic environments.

And everything looks lovely. There was no chug on my iPad Air, and the scrambled, desperate fights burst and pop with flashes of light and explosions.

Cyber slash

It might not be the most original game in the world, but there's something about Implosion - Never Lose Hope that will make you barge your way through its single player campaign.

It's a big, brash action game that fits pretty much perfectly in the palm of your hand. And while you're slashing and blasting your way through its army of mutants and monsters, you won't be able to stop smiling.
