Heroes of Might and Magic III HD

Heroes of Might and Magic III HD is a retro game with the edges smoothed off. At least when it comes to its presentation.

The beating heart of the game is still decidedly old fashioned, and a lick of paint and a few extra pixels here and there can't do anything to change that fact.

If you're a fan of the series then you'll likely lap up this portable version, and look past the little quirks and nuances that new players might find annoying.

If you've yet to play a Might and Magic game though, it's likely this one will leave you cold. The strategy RPG has moved on a good way since the game first came out, and it's starting to creak and groan under the strain.

Heroic?

The games sees you leading a hero through a map. There are areas to explore, loot to find, resources to nab, and strongholds to capture.

Start a fight and the view switches from the map to a grid-based battlefield. Here you'll pit your soldiers against an enemy army in a turn-based battle to the death.

Everything is controlled with taps, and the UI works reasonably well. It can be a little fiddly getting to grips with how everything works, and the two-finger-swipe scroll command feels a little cumbersome.

But there's a meaty, in-depth tactical RPG underneath all the retro stylings.

It can feel a little bland if you're not paying attention, but if you want to sink your teeth into settlement micro-management, resource gathering, and army-building, there's an awful lot here to grab your attention.

Magic?

It's unlikely that Heroes of Might and Magic III HD will snag itself a new audience. It's a bit too fiddly, a bit too clunky, and a bit too cruel to appeal to your average mobile player.

But if you're a fan of the series this is a neatly realised, reasonably well polished port that should scratch an itch or two.

Heroes of Might and Magic III HD

A solid port of a solid game, but if you don't have the time to put into it, Heroes of Might and Magic III HD can feel a little flat
