Blizzard announces new iPad freemium card battler Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

Blizzard has dealt its first hand regarding its maiden mobile free-to-play project, card battler Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.

In the forthcoming iPad (plus PC and Mac) game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, you will pick a class from World of Warcraft (Warrior, Mage, Paladin, etc.), and do battle with either AI or online opponents.

The game was created by Team 5, a group of programmers within Blizzard who were chosen to lend their more 'generalised' skills to the project.

Speaking about the gestation of Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Blizzard senior vice president of story and franchise development Chris Metzen said: "I think there's something really fundamental about TCGs to [Blizzard]."

"Many of us who got our start at Blizzard in the glorious golden age... we all came up playing Magic: The Gathering and Jihad - all sorts of card games when that scene was really blowing up."

As in other digital TCGs, you will be able to craft new cards, cast spells, and conjure powerful creatures to fight for you in Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.

Expect to see Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft on iPad before the year is out.
