Grid Rush doesn't pull its punches. Nor does it tell you how you're supposed to play it. You either need to read the App Store description or figure it out for yourself.

A grid of endlessly changing letters pops up, along with a word that you need to spell. You've then got a brief amount of time to tap out the letters in the right order.

Tap an incorrect letter and it disappears. If you don't manage to find the right letter before time runs out it's game over.

Tap to spell

It's a simple enough game to play. Search the grid, find the right letter, then tap on it. But the grid is constantly shifting, and letter tiles don't just change what character they're displaying, they change colour as well.

It makes for a disorientating experience, and even when you've got the hang of things you'll still find yourself ending a go with a score only a couple of letters high.

That balance between frantic searching and relief at finding what you were looking for isn't quite right here. Sometimes it all feels a little unfair, and your mad scramble for a letter goes unrewarded.

The compulsion loop isn't quite tight enough either. It's easy to let frustration get in the way of the simple gameplay, and often that means you'll put the game aside and go and play soemthing else instead.

Hard words

Grid Rush's greatest strength is its simplicity. But it's often obscured by the difficulty of the play. The retro stylings are likely going to be a little too garish for some people as well.

There's a solid word game here, but it never quite manages to shine through.

You'll have fun while you're playing Grid Rush, but you'll also swear a lot and throw your hands up in anger and desperation. And not in a good way.
