Peter Molyneux's studio 22Cans has caught us off-guard by soft-launching its free-to-play god game Godus on the New Zealand App Store.

Godus shares similarities with Molyneux's previous PC titles Populous and Black & White, meaning you get to play god to a small civilisation here.

You start off with two Followers. By increasing their faith in you, you'll grow more powerful and gain new abilities and materials.

To do that, you'll need to increase the population by moulding the land. This enables you to build a settlement. Soon after, you'll need to protect your villages from natural disasters.

You can check out our previous hands-on impressions of Godus for more details.

Godus's free-to-play monetisation model has been a much-publicised discussion point. In conversation with PG, Molyneux said that the game would contain monetisation "that hasn't existed before".

Upon playing Godus, you'll find that the monetisation elements aren't immediately available. They'll become apparent later on in what Molyneux likes to think of as an "invest-to-play" model.

No doubt you're curious about Godus for a number of reasons. If you have a New Zealand App Store account, you can download the game right now to find some answers.

If you don't have a New Zealand account, then we do have a guide to show you how to get one if you're in the UK or US.
