The hottest game on the planet is having a cataclysmic event. The sky is cracking and people are panicking, running amok as the landscape changes before their eyes.

It's not just the world that's shifting though, there are now vehicles, new mechanics, outfits and options galore. You'd be forgiven for having missed some of the biggest announcements.

But that's exactly why we're here, isn't it? We've broken down the five essential things you need to know about Fortnite's latest update, just because we're that good.

1
Golf carts

That's right ladies and gentlemen, it has finally happened. Fortnite has vehicles now. But hold your horses, these aren't quite the all terrain vehicles, nor are they all that sturdy.

The golf carts finally offer a nice new convenient way to traverse the map, but if someone spots you, you can certainly get shot out of your seat.

Definitely a nice addition, and not the game breaking change some had feared. Very nice.

2
Desert dunes

The map has changed! Gasp! And this time, there's a desert section on the western shore, with some brand new areas and architecture.

The desert has a western vibe happening - oh, maybe that's why it's on the west shore? - and you can also find a race course here, freshly paved for your to race around in those golf carts.

It's definitely another enjoyable addition to mix up the map and change how player strategies will change in these new areas.

3
Viking village

One of the game's mountaintops has been completely transformed into a frosty viking village, complete with a longboat.

This is another great change of scenery, and a good place to start, as the longboat has a golden chest inside, and can be broken down for plenty of wood.

Being a mountain too, this can be a crazy place for a game to finish, as you either approach on foot, or stay on top and snipe approaching players.

4
Motion controls

Dreams really do come true, at least for me, as proven by the addition of motion controls to the Nintendo Switch version of Fortnite.

This isn't obvious really, but head into the options menu and you'll see three motion sensitivity sliders, all on the lowest setting - essentially off.

You can crank up motion sensitivity by sliding them all up. You get to choose from standard aiming, aiming down sight, and scoped aiming, all with customisable sensitivity options. Nice.

So much customisation

If you're the kind of player who invests in V-Bucks, then oh boy, you'll love season 5. Fortnite has a whole bunch of brand new things to invest in for you right now.

Emotes, outfits, sprays, gliders, all of the customisation options you love, but with more of it than ever before.

Even if you haven't invested in V-Bucks and the Battle Pass, there's still loads of items for you to earn, just keep churning out those daily goals and challenges.
