Fold the Adventure wants to be a clever mix between a puzzler and a platformer. It wants to test your grey matter, then let you poke around its minuscule levels.
And it works for a few levels. It's clever, well put together, and the twee art style, while not exactly fresh, is polished and slick.
But after a while things get a little tougher, and what was a relatively sedate experience becomes slightly too frustrating.
It's a shame, because there's a nice idea here, but you start feeling that the game is trying to kill you far too early on.
Stick or twist?You play a rabbit creature who's trying to find stars. As this is a mobile game there are three of these to collect on every level. The twist is you need to build the level before you can do anything else.
There's a scissor tool and a score tool at your disposal, and you need to cut and bend the flat levels in the correct places so when they fold out into three dimensions there are platforms there for you.
It's a neat central mechanic, and adds a puzzling element to proceedings. Working out where the scores and cuts need to go takes up far more of your time than the actual adventuring.
Once everything's built you tap to move your chunky little rabbit, nabbing the stars and then heading for the obligatory glowy portal exit.
Paper cutThe game takes a backwards step when it introduces enemies though. They make everything that much tougher. The controls aren't really sharp enough to treat them like you would in a real platformer, and the puzzling becomes a little more obscure the second they pop up.
And in the end that spoils the flow of things. You're no longer having a rollicking good papercraft time, you're slogging it out, trying the same sections over and over. And that's just no fun.
There are some really great ideas here, and moments when everything gels together to make a wonderful whole. But unfortunately they get a bit squashed the more you play.
