Fire & Forget The Final Assault

Fire-and-forget is a military term relating to guided missile systems that, once locked on, can be fired without any skill or additional concern on the trigger-puller's part.

It also suggests a mindless, blasé approach to destruction.

Either way, Fire & Forget is an apt name for Anuman's resurrection of an old Amiga property.

War veteran

The game follows the original's basic template quite faithfully. You view your futuristic car from above and behind as you trundle along a hazard-littered highway, dodging mines and blasting enemy craft from the road or sky using a semi-automated aiming system.

You control your car by tilting your iOS device left and right, but this isn't the best use of the accelerometer we've ever seen, to put it mildly. The controls are twitchy and imprecise, and you'll find yourself taking to the skies rather than attempting to dodge through gaps in the minefields and road-blocks that you encounter.

Yep, your car can sprout wings and fly for a limited time, which sounds more exciting than it is. You barely reach 20 feet off the ground, and the manoeuvre only really seems to be useful for the aforementioned iffy control-bypass, as well as for dodging certain incoming attacks and collecting airborne power-ups.

Autopilot

Fire & Forget The Final Assault trundles along reasonably well in its own competent way, but it's deeply repetitive and just not particularly accomplished in any single area.

It might model itself on an Amiga game, but it looks like a PC game from the mid-'90s. This isn't intended as a compliment.

The palette flips between muddy and garish and the textures are achingly bland. Think Carmageddon without the personality.

This could, of course, be forgiven if Fire & Forget The Final Assault were a thrill to play, but its pattern of extended road-run followed by samey boss fight followed by extended road-run soon wears thin.

In short, you'll probably fire it up once and forget it forever.

Fire & Forget The Final Assault

Fire & Forget The Final Assault is a curiously flat and uninspired resurrection of a relatively obscure Amiga game that somehow fails to raise the pulse even a smidgen
