Good news, iPad owners based in the UK and US: you'll be getting your very own version of Subatomic Studios's smash hit sequel Fieldrunners 2 at midnight tonight.

This is tower defence at its purest and, some would argue, finest. We thought it was rather enjoyable in its iPhone guise, handing it an extremely healthy PG Silver Award.

Even in a tower defence-saturated App Store, we found that "Fieldrunners 2 holds its own, giving you loads of content and delivering it with style and polish."

Universally speaking

Fieldrunners 2 launched on iPhone on July 19th, but while it could technically be played on an iPad, it wasn't optimised for the larger touchscreen device.

Rather than launch a Universal app, Subatomic committed to releasing a separate iPad version at some indeterminate point in the future, which led to the usual griping and groaning from those who feel that Fieldrunners plays best on a large screen.

iPad TD fans have had to spend the last two months impatiently fiddling with their slate's Home button, watching the clock, and taking to Twitter to give Subatomic an earful. Or doing what I did and playing Kingdom Rush. Seriously, it's ace. Get it.

Anyway, back to Fieldrunners 2 HD - it's out now on the New Zealand App Store for $10.99, which should translate to £5.49 / $7.99 when the game goes live on the UK and US stores tonight.

Director's commentary

What do you get for the £3.50 premium over the iPhone version? New iPad Retina display-optimised graphics, for one thing. You also get the following five exclusive (for now) towers:

  • Cannonball Tower - "lets you play pool with Fieldrunners"
  • Zap Tower - "electrocutes groups with chains of lightning"
  • Sonic Tower - "blasts enemies like a shotgun of sound"
  • Slow Link Tower - "freezes enemies as they march through lasers"
  • Machine Gun Tower - "fires powerful bullets with tracers"

You also get one and a half hours of developer commentaries and the ability to transfer save files via iCloud.

Other than that, Fieldrunners 2 HD is the same beautifully balanced game of careful tower placement and casual slaughter. Just the game to curl up with as the nights start drawing in and the pavements turn treacherously mulchy.
