With Magic 2015 and Hearthstone currently battling to be king of the card genre, you might think smaller developers would leave the two titans to duke it out in peace.

However, developer Tequila Games believes that its upcoming iPad card battler EarthCore: Shattered Elements is a worthy contender for the CCG crown.

The game is based not around mana points, but a unique risk dynamic. Cards are grouped into one of three elemental categories: water, fire, or nature.

Each card has an inherent risk value - the more value the card has, the greater the damage it will cause if victorious in combat. However, if the card is defeated, you'll lose an equal amount from your own health, making every powerful card played a serious gamble.

We'll let you know as soon as EarthCore has a release date. In the meantime, check out our early access hands-on with the iPad version below.
