New Zealand-based iOS programmer Vitaly Pronkin is working on a native Dwarf Fortress app for iOS.

Pronkin made the announcement this week in the Bay 12 Forums.

When asked to explain how his project works, Pronkin explained that it's not a port of Dwarf Fortress, but an iOS app communicating with a dfhack plugin.

Presuming it doesn't get shut down by original Dwarf Fortress developer Bay 12 Games, this iOS app would be free when released, just as the PC version is.

Pronkin also shared a number of screenshots and a video of his work (which you can watch below) to show how it looks on iOS currently.

He also notes that it's far from complete and will take a long time to finish. As he's an iOS developer, and working on his own, he won't be making an Android version.

If you didn't know, Dwarf Fortress is a construction game, management simulation, and a roguelike.

You command a group of dwarves and attempt to build an underground fortress. You have to mine for resources, fight goblins, and care for the dwarves.

Dwarf Fortress is known for its complexity and difficulty. It has also spawned many stories from its open-ended play, some amusing, others epic in nature.

You can download Dwarf Fortress for free on its website.
