Rise of Nations developer Big Huge Games has been brought back from the dead, and has announced a new iOS and Android game called DomiNations.

It sounds a lot like Civilization. The game lets you choose a nation, unlock new technologies, build the Wonders of the World, recruit famous generals, and advance through the eras from the Stone Age to the Space Age.

And to help out, Civilization II designer Brian Reynolds (a Big Huge Games founder) is the lead designer on the project.

But before you get too excited, you should probably note that the game is free to play, and borrows from iTunes juggernaut Clash of Clans as much as it does from Firaxis's empire-building epic.

Suitably, the game will have alliances so you can co-operate with other players. And there will be single-player campaigns, "from the Fertile Crescent to the Peloponnesian War".

How this storied strategy game developer will weave taut tactical balance with free to play monetisation is anyone's guess. We'll find out, with great interest, when DomiNations drops next year.
