Originally made in a matter of hours for Ludum Dare, Dark Echo was released in expanded and, quite frankly, brilliant form on iOS today.

It's a sound-based experience with puzzle and horror elements. But unlike, say, Papa Sangre there are actually graphics to look at here. Not much, but enough that you'll feel terror and panic at times.

The idea is to guide a pair of feet viewed from a top-down view through pitch black environments. You do this by using soundwaves that are visualised as lines that bounce off the walls, revealing their position.

So, yes, you need to make noise. Luckily, every time you walk the feet somewhere the footsteps create soundwaves. Complementing this is the fact that the footsteps change in timbre when they step on new surfaces.

You can also tap and hold the centre of the screen to produce a much more substantial clap.

There are 80 levels to navigate in this way. But it's not the dark that will be your greatest enemy. No, that title belongs to the unknown evil that chases you when it hears you coming.

You can purchase Dark Echo for £1.49 / $1.99 on the App Store right now.
