Candy Crush Jelly Saga - I think you're probably ready for this jelly

Even if you dislike the Candy Crush series with a passion, you can't help but be impressed by the production values of King's sweet-matching saga.

You might not like what it does, but it would be churlish to suggest that it doesn't do it well. From the polish to the design, from the way it eases you in then presents you with impossible challenges, it's a masterclass in modern mobile gaming.

And Candy Crush Jelly Saga is no different. It's almost overwhelmingly slick, sweet to the point you can feel your teeth rotting just looking at it, and will likely make an considerable amount of money.

But what do you do?

You match stuff. Candies, to be precise. Like the other games in the series each level gives you a challenge. Sometimes you need to fill squares with jelly, other times you need to free creatures trapped under sugary frosting. You unlock more challenges as you play.

And it's pretty entertaining stuff. King has nailed this casual matching since day one really. You're always pushing to finish the level you're on, and you'll do some cheers and fist pumps when you manage to beat a particularly difficult trial.

There are some interesting new ideas here as well. Boss battles see you trying to fill a level with jelly of your own colour while another character tries to do the same.

It adds an interesting layer of strategy as you try to make sure the powerful sweets you create by matching multiple candies don't give an advantage to your foe.

It's free to play, right?

Oh yeah. There's an energy system here, and all the usual trappings you see in the casual match-stuff genre. That's not really a surprise though, since Candy Crush pretty much perfected it.

If you liked the first umpteen games in the series, then you're going to devour all the sugary treats on show here, but it's unlikely to sway your opinion on King's opus one way or the other.

Is it fun? Yes. Is it addictive? Absolutely. Will it shake up the match-three genre? Not in the slightest. But it was never meant to do that.

This is another highly polished, perfectly designed puzzler from King, and if you let it, it'll take up hours of your life and a good chunk of your pay cheque.
