If you thought we were done with games adopting a Minecraft aesthetic and placing 'Blocky' in the title, think again.

While Blocky Racing wins no points for originality, however, it deserves more than to be dismissed out of hand.

This is a fun kart racer that sets itself apart from the crowd by some entertainingly tactile handling.

Driving auto

Don't expect Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed levels of 3D splendour here. Blocky Racing isn't that kind of fully fleshed-out kart racing game.

Rather, it adopts a fixed isometric viewpoint, with the odd bit of zooming out when you pick up speed on the straights.

Control is super simple - it's just left and right. By default those commands are situated to either side of the screen, though you can switch to a virtual control pad or steering wheel in the options menu.

Whatever you choose, Blocky Racing's slidey, momentum-heavy handling makes navigating each tight Scalextric-like track cleanly a challenge. But a pleasant one.

Fender bender

You'll want to avoid bumping into the sides - not to mention your fellow racers - where possible because of Blocky Racing's cute damage system.

Take a heavy blow and your Lego-like car will shed some of the blocks that form its shape. Get down to the bare bones and your car will explode, costing you precious time.

It's possible to fix your car by driving over healing squares, or by collecting a health item. Other items run the full gamut of kart racer power-ups, from heat seeking missiles to shields and mines.

These items are fun to use but, crucially, I never felt like they were excessively employed or overly punitive. If I lost it was because I didn't race well enough, not because the rest of the back bombarded me with destructive items.

Add in a fair upgrade system that lets you either upgrade your current car or buy new ones, and you have a fun (if deeply unspectacular) casual kart racer with an entertainingly challenging handling system.

Blocky Racing review - A fun casual kart racer

Blocky Racing doesn't reinvent the casual karting genre, but it does win you over with a distinctive handling system and balanced, competitive racing
