The 25 best racing games on iPhone and iPad

25 essential games to start your iOS collection
Product: Best iPhone games | Publisher: Steel Media Ltd | Format: iPhone, iPad
Updated August 8, 2017: New entries added

The days when slick racing games were the preserve of home consoles and arcade machines have long past.

You can now get anything that scratches your racing itch on your iOS device, whether you're into advanced simulators, slick arcade racers, or colourful karters.

What's more, Apple's platform is also home to a range of new racing sub-genres and hybrids that defy categorisation.

We've picked out the best racers on iPhone and iPad for you. Disagree? Let us know your favourites in the comments below.

#1 Gear.Club

Product: Gear.ClubFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Eden GamesGenres: Racing

Coming from a developer with genuine console racer pedigree, it's no surprise that Gear.Club is the most exciting new iOS racer for years. Great car physics, top graphics, and a large roster of real life rides make this our new pole sitter.

#2 Real Racing 2

Product: Real Racing 2Formats: Android, iPhoneDeveloper: FiremintGenres: Racing

Real Racing 2
It's no longer the uncontested king of mobile racing, thanks to the arrival of newer, prettier rivals. But Real Racing 2 still has a great handling model, loads of cars, and endless content for your cash.

#3 Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Product: Sonic & All-Stars Racing TransformedFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, 3DS, PS Vita, SteamDeveloper: Sumo DigitalPublisher: SegaGenres: Racing

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
The closest thing you're going to get to Mario Kart on your iPhone, for now at least. In this cheeky kart racing game, Sonic and other Sega mascots use power-ups and shortcuts to get ahead.

#4 DrawRace 2

Product: DrawRace 2Formats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: RedLynxPublisher: ChillingoGenres: Line-drawing, Racing

DrawRace 2
While most racers stick to an on-screen steering wheel, or make you tilt your phone about like a mad loon, DrawRace sees you tracing a perfect racing line with your finger. Clever, and fun.

#5 Reckless Racing 3

Product: Reckless Racing 3Formats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Pixelbite GamesGenres: Arcade, Racing

Reckless Racing 3
Reckless Racing 3 is all about churning through dirt, elbowing your opponents out of the way with your steering wheel on opposite lock. It's gleeful, messy fun.

#6 AG Drive

Product: AG DriveFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Zorg EntertainmentGenres: Racing

AG Drive
Definitely the closest thing you're going to get to Wipeout on your phone. Or any platform, it seems. This stunning anti-gravity racer was years in the making, and will have you straining to catch the awesome visuals as you race past at breakneck speed.

#8 VS. Racing 2

Product: VS. Racing 2Formats: iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Maciek Drejak LabsPublisher: Maciek Drejak LabsGenres: Arcade, Multiplayer, Racing

VS. Racing 2
This is a wonderfully entertaining, perfectly balanced arcade blast with uncommonly accomplished (but not too accomplished) AI drivers leading to intense bite-sized races.

#9 Blocky Roads

Product: Blocky RoadsFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: DogByte GamesGenres: Racing

Blocky Roads
A deceptively accomplished, finely honed take on the Trials template. Get your blocky car to the finishing line by scaling hills, dips, and improbably large chasms.

#11 Horizon Chase

Product: Horizon ChaseFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Aquiris Game Studio

Horizon Chase
Remember when racing games were about fast red cars, bright blue skies, and long ass roads that just stretched off into the distance? Horizon Chase certainly remembers, and brings back those Outrun memories in style.

#12 Death Rally

Product: Death RallyFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Mountain SheepPublisher: Remedy EntertainmentGenres: Action, Racing

Death Rally
Big-time console developer Remedy provided a suitably brash combat racer in Death Rally. Take part in dangerous Mad Max-inspired races where dirty tricks and rocket launchers are more important than taking the racing line.

#13 Asphalt 8: Airborne

Product: Asphalt 8: AirborneFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows PhoneDeveloper: Gameloft BarcelonaPublisher: GameloftGenres: Racing

Asphalt 8: Airborne
This goofy arcade game thinks concepts like physics and gravity are purely optional when it comes to racing games. You'll boost, smash cars, and make huge jumps on your way to the finish line.

#13 Riptide GP: Renegade

Product: Riptide GP: RenegadeFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Vector Unit

Riptide GP: Renegade
This grittier, more spectacular brother of Riptide GP 2 proves that racing games don't have to have wheels and roads. This splishy splashy jet ski sim trades pavement for water, and let's you do massive stunts in mid-air to gain boosts.

#13 Slingshot Racing

Product: Slingshot RacingFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Snowbolt InteractivePublisher: Crescent Moon GamesGenres: Racing

Slingshot Racing
Another game that does something super smart with the touchscreen. This time, you hold the screen to latch onto giant pillars on the race course which let you arc around corners. Clever, different, and fun.

#14 Motorsport Manager 2

Product: Motorsport Manager 2Formats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Genres: Simulation, Sports

Motorsport Manager 2
Just as in the brilliant original, you don't actually race any cars in Motorsport Manager 2. But your job as manager - hiring and firing racers, choosing tires, and investing in sponsors - is just as important.

#15 F1 2016

Product: F1 2016Formats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Codemasters

F1 2016
Its roster of cars and drivers might be out of date now, but F1 2016 remains a wonderful representation of elite level motor racing. This is for those who take their racing seriously.

#16 Go Rally

Product: Go RallyFormats: iPhone, iPad, Apple TVPublisher: ChillingoGenres: Racing

Go Rally
Go Rally isn't a serious rally sim by any means, but it does provide a gloriously tight series of slidey point-to-point time trials.

Product: MAXIMUM CARFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: I Fight BearsGenres: Racing

We don't generally approve of excessive capitalisation, but in this case MAXIMUM CAR earns a pass. It's a brilliantly OTT combat racer with chunky graphics and a strong whiff of Burnout.

#18 Need for Speed: Most Wanted

Product: Need for Speed: Most WantedFormats: Android, iPhone, Mobile, iPad, PS VitaGenres: Racing

Need for Speed: Most Wanted
A strong arcade racer that looks as good as it feels to play. It's bursting with content and offers so much feisty car-on-car combat that it would make a Burnout fan go all gooey inside.

#19 Ridge Racer Slipstream

Product: Ridge Racer SlipstreamFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: InvictusPublisher: Namco Bandai GamesGenres: Racing

Ridge Racer Slipstream
Ridge Racer is one of the original arcade racers. A bright and buoyant driving game where the outcome of the race was heavily dependant on how far you could whip your tail out when going around corners. This mobile version carries on the tradition with aplomb.

#20 Table Top Racing

Product: Table Top RacingFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, PS VitaDeveloper: Playrise DigitalPublisher: Playrise DigitalGenres: Racing

Table Top Racing
More Micro Machines than Gran Turismo. This game sees tiny weeny cars battling it out with power-ups on kitchen tables and other four-legged pieces of furniture. Fun times with a friend.

#21 Pako

Product: PakoFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows PhoneDeveloper: Tree Men GamesGenres: Arcade, Racing

Your brakes are cut. Your throttle pedal (is that what it's called? I don't drive? The big go button) is stuck to the floor. Now you've got to run around from the cops in this manic arcade romp.

#22 CSR Racing 2

Product: CSR Racing 2Formats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: NaturalMotion Games

CSR Racing 2
This much beloved drag racer only cares about two things. Showing a roster of shiny cars you definitely couldn't afford in real life in the best possible light. And going forward very fast, one gear shift at a time. Luckily, it does both things very well.

#23 Jet Car Stunts 2

Product: Jet Car Stunts 2Formats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: True AxisGenres: Action, Racing

Jet Car Stunts 2
This game does not do anything realistically. The vehicles are bonkers, the levels are just shapes floating in the sky, and the gameplay is a barmy mix of daredevil stunt driving and retro platforming.

#24 GT Racing 2

Product: GT Racing 2Formats: Android, iPhone, Mobile, iPadPublisher: GameloftGenres: Arcade, Racing, Sports

GT Racing 2
Gameloft's Real Racing 3 rival largely matches the competition with its tight racing and impressive roster of real cars - if you have the patience/real world funds to unlock them.

#25 Does not Commute

Product: Does not CommuteFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: MediocreGenres: Puzzle, Racing

Does not Commute
A silly puzzle game where you are your own worst enemy. Every time you try and drive a car across town, you'll have to contend with other cars you drove in previous goes. It becomes a tangled temporal spaghetti junction of regrets and self loathing.
