The 25 best RPGs on iPhone and iPad

A level up from the rest
Product: Best iPhone games | Publisher: Steel Media Ltd | Format: iPhone, iPad

Updated August 2, 2017: New entries added

You don't get as many pure RPG games on mobile as you used to. Here in these hybrid-happy days it's all roguelike this, procedurally generated that, and CCG the other.

But what this often revolves around is playing a role in an epic adventure - the very essence of an RPG.

We're not too precious about honing in on what an RPG constitutes. Suffice to say if a game features stat-heavy battles, copious incidental conversations, potion-laden shops and some kind of fantasy lore, it's probably in with a shout.

There are a whole bunch of excellent RPGs available for the iPhone and iPad. Even whittling the list down to 25 was tricky.

#1 Wayward Souls

Product: Wayward SoulsFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: RocketCat GamesPublisher: RocketCat GamesGenres: Action, RPG

Wayward Souls
An action-RPG of the highest order, Wayward Souls mixes tactile combat with lively physics, randomised dungeons, and bucket-loads of secrets.

#2 Knights of the Old Republic

Product: Knights of the Old RepublicFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, SteamDeveloper: BioWarePublisher: AspyrGenres: Action, RPG

Knights of the Old Republic
Yes, you can actually be a Jedi Knight, shaping your power-set and choosing whether to pursue the light or the dark side. Naturally, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a contender for the best RPG ever.

#3 Banner Saga 2

Product: Banner Saga 2Formats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Stoic StudioGenres: RPG, Strategy

Banner Saga 2
The Banner Saga franchise eschews the usual sub-Tolkien and JRPG steampunk settings in favour of a beautifully downbeat Nordic universe. This sequel picks were the original left off with another memorably bleak adventure.

#4 Final Fantasy IX

Product: Final Fantasy IXFormats: Android, iPhone, PSP, iPadPublisher: Square Enix Genres: Adventure, RPG

Final Fantasy IX
It isn't as highly lauded as Final Fantasy VII, but we're going to be controversial and say that Final Fantasy IX - arguably the last of the traditional FF entries - is the better JRPG to play here in 2017 on your iOS device.

#5 Death Road to Canada

Product: Death Road to CanadaFormats: iPhone, iPadDeveloper: MadgardenPublisher: RocketCat GamesGenres: Action, Adventure, RPG

Death Road to Canada
DRtC is another game that makes us um and ah over whether it's an RPG. What we do know is that it's a zombie apocalypse roguelike survival game with team management and action elements, and that it's awesome.

#6 Templar Battleforce

Product: Templar BattleforceFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Cory TreseGenres: Card/board game, RPG, Strategy

Templar Battleforce
In our review, we called Templar Battleforce 'A top quality blend of tactics and role-playing, with enough customisation options for enormous replay value.' Now if that ain't a recommendation, I don't know what is.

#7 Crashlands

Product: CrashlandsFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, SteamDeveloper: Butterscotch ShenanigansPublisher: Butterscotch ShenanigansGenres: Action, Adventure, RPG

Crashlands
Though it can be a little underwhelming at the start, Crashlands develops into a very funny survival adventure through a hostile alien world. Give it a try!

#8 Fighting Fantasy Legends

Product: Fighting Fantasy LegendsFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Nomad Games LimitedGenres: Card/board game, RPG

Fighting Fantasy Legends
Taking the Fighting Fantasy gamebook series in an interesting new direction, Fighting Fantasy Legends adds board game and adventure elements to make it feel like... well, a really solid RPG.

#9 Dungeon Rushers

Product: Dungeon RushersFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Gobelinz StudioGenres: Multiplayer, RPG

Dungeon Rushers
An excellent dungeon crawler that's been finely honed for mobile play - all topped off with a sharply written story.

#10 Dungeon of the Endless

Product: Dungeon of the EndlessFormats: iPadDeveloper: Amplitude StudiosPublisher: Amplitude StudiosGenres: RPG, Strategy, Tower defence

Dungeon of the Endless
You might die a lot in Dungeon of the Endless, but it's a fun and fresh mix of action, roguelike, and resource management sim genres. And just look at that lush art style!

#11 Galaxy of Pen and Paper

Product: Galaxy of Pen and PaperFormats: iPhone, iPadPublisher: Behold Studios

Galaxy of Pen and Paper
Like Knights of Pen and Paper only with a sci-fi theme, Galaxy of Pen and Paper once again tips its hat to the fine tradition of table top role playing in trademark cheeky fashion.

#12 Five Card Quest

Product: Five Card QuestFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: RocketCat GamesGenres: Card battler, RPG

Five Card Quest
It's a quest, with five cards! What more do you need to know? How about that Five Card Quest is a turn-based RPG-CCG-roguelike, if you can make sense of that. And that it's really good.

#13 Shadowrun: Dragonfall

Product: Shadowrun: DragonfallFormats: Android, iPad, SteamDeveloper: Harebrained SchemesGenres: Action, RPG

Shadowrun: Dragonfall
Despite a mountainous learning curve, Harebrained Schemes's cyber-fantasy builds a believable world crammed with grimy detail. It's a sequel to Shadowrun Returns and delivers 20 hours of unflinching violence and old-school storytelling.

#14 The World Ends with You: Solo Remix

Product: The World Ends with You: Solo RemixFormats: iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Jupiter CorporationPublisher: Square Enix Genres: Multiplayer, RPG

The World Ends with You: Solo Remix
Originally plagued by glitches on iOS, this classic J-RPG casts you as Neku, a loner who loses his memory and ends up working with a shadowy group known as The Reapers. It's set in an alternative world where fashion plays a part in your combat skills - wearing uncool clothes can slash your damage bonuses.

#15 Dungelot: Shattered Lands

Product: Dungelot: Shattered LandsFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Red Winter SoftwareGenres: Hardcore, Puzzle, RPG

Dungelot: Shattered Lands
Third in the Dungelot series, the attractive Shattered Lands is an epic roguelike adventure, where you hunt for keys in a randomly generated top-down dungeon. The ultimate aim is to simply make it back home in one piece, through minesweeper-like levels packed with minigames and bosses.

#16 Sproggiwood

Product: SproggiwoodFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, SteamDeveloper: Freehold GamesPublisher: Freehold GamesGenres: RPG

Sproggiwood
With its Finnish fairytale stylings and frantic approach to combat, Sproggiwood is a cheerful alternative to standard roguelike crawlers. Abilities are unlocked as you progress and gold can be spent on buildings to open up new characters at your base.

#17 Desktop Dungeons

Product: Desktop DungeonsFormats: Android, iPad, SteamDeveloper: QCF DesignPublisher: QCF DesignGenres: RPG

Desktop Dungeons
A huge roguelike with a lot more to offer than you'd originally think.

#18 Death Road to Canada

Product: Death Road to CanadaFormats: iPhone, iPadDeveloper: MadgardenPublisher: RocketCat GamesGenres: Action, Adventure, RPG

Death Road to Canada
DRtC is another game that makes us um and ah over whether it's an RPG. What we do know is that it's a zombie apocalypse roguelike survival game with team management and action elements, and that it's awesome.

#19 Monster Hunter Freedom Unite

Product: Monster Hunter Freedom UniteFormats: iPhone, PSP, iPadPublisher: CapcomGenres: Action, RPG

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on iOS is a port of the very same game you obsessed over on PSP back in 2008. All of the monster battling, OCD-inducing crafting, and zaniness is present here - just with some slightly iffy controls. Hook up an MFi controller to fix that.

#20 Fighting Fantasy Legends

Product: Fighting Fantasy LegendsFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadPublisher: Nomad Games LimitedGenres: Card/board game, RPG

Fighting Fantasy Legends
Taking the Fighting Fantasy gamebook series in an interesting new direction, Fighting Fantasy Legends adds board game and adventure elements to make it feel like... well, a really solid RPG.

#21 Dragon Quest VIII

Product: Dragon Quest VIIIFormats: Android, iPhone, iPad, 3DSPublisher: Square Enix Genres: RPG

Dragon Quest VIII
Dragon Quest VIII marked the point at which the series went fully 3D. The result is a wonderful combination of traditional and expansive JRPG elements with an atypically joyous tone.

#22 Transistor

Product: TransistorFormats: iPhone, iPad, SteamDeveloper: Supergiant GamesPublisher: Supergiant GamesGenres: Action, Adventure, RPG

Transistor
Supergiant followed up the acclaimed Bastion with another solid RPG in Transistor - though this one favours strategy over the brute force of its predecessor. With a gorgeous art style, innovative combat system, and a returning role for the hit voice actor Logan Cunningham, Transistor's well worth a look.

#23 Knights of Pen and Paper 2

Product: Knights of Pen and Paper 2Formats: Android, iPhone, iPad, SteamPublisher: ParadoxGenres: Adventure, RPG

Knights of Pen and Paper 2
Knights of Pen & Paper 2 is the absolute best way to experience the role playing classic Dungeons and Dragons on your mobile. Sure, it doesn't quite take itself as seriously (is that even possible?) but it evokes memories of sitting at a table with a bunch of nerds in the middle of the night, chucking dice and Lucozade like there's no tomorrow.

#24 Costume Quest

Product: Costume QuestFormats: iPhone, iPad, SteamDeveloper: Double FineGenres: RPG

Costume Quest
If you like your RPGs turn-based and off-kilter, Costume Quest is the one for you. There's also a generous portion of adventure games thrown in for good measure, which is to be expected of a Double Fine production.

#25 The Lords of Midnight

Product: The Lords of MidnightFormats: Android, iPhone, iPadDeveloper: Chilli Hugger SoftwarePublisher: Chilli Hugger SoftwareGenres: Adventure, RPG, Strategy

The Lords of Midnight
Is The Lords of Midnight actually an RPG? The publisher calls it an adventure strategy game, but the game's fantasy setting and epic first-person exploration means we're comfortable including it. And to think it was first released in 1984...
