Let's not mess around here - Battle Odyssey is a blatant attempt to capitalise on the immense success of Puzzle & Dragons.

It's another casual match three game with a Pokemon-like battling, collecting, and evolving element grafted on. Suffice to say, it's not as good.

That's not to say that Gameloft's effort isn't well done, though. It's got a nicely realised anime-like art style, and the core matching action is at least a little different from P&D's - you're drawing links here rather than dragging tiles.

Somehow, though, that new type of colour matching just isn't as satisfying to play. It feels more like a basic observational test than a strategic puzzler at times.

Gameloft is typically in your face with the freemium aspect too, which will instantly put some off. It's just not as subtle as its inspiration.

A competent Puzzle & Dragons clone, then, but one that's in a somewhat devolved state.
