Civilisation V designer Jon Shafer has announced that he's releasing his new empire builder At the Gates on iOS.

Set during the decline of the Roman Empire, At the Gates was originally floated on Kickstarter as a PC-only title.

Following the enormous success of the PC version's funding campaign - which has attracted donations totalling nearly double its $40,000 target (with ten days to spare) - At the Gates is now, however, set to invade iOS devices as well.

As with Shafer's most recent project, Civilisation V, At the Gates is a strategy title with a focus on building empires and overcoming enemies.

Over the course of the game, you'll guide your small barbarian tribe across the randomly generated world, learning from other clans and scuffling with aggressors as you go.

In addition to contending with diminishing resources, though, you'll have to pay attention to the seasons, for they will affect both your food supplies and your transportation routes.

For example, frozen rivers will render previously accessible waterways impassable, while soil will go from a fertile to barren state.

Shafer has admitted that the iOS version of At the Gates will require "a bit more work than the Mac and Linux ones", making a release date difficult to predict.

There's even talk of an Android version of At the Gates, but that isn't set in stone. We should know more in ten days when the game's Kickstarter campaign ends.
